הדיון על אוריינטליזם מקבל היבט מעניין כאשר הוא משמש באופן אירוני בידי מי שהן תדיר מושאיו – נשים מזרחיות . ב” הדרום הוא הלך רוח” שהוצגה בגלריה שלוש (המארחת מידי שנה את בוגרי המכללה )האלה אבו פריח הציגה את red dancing לופ מיצב וידאו ובו אישה רוקדת לבושה בבגד באדום אש כשהמצלמה נעה גם לדמות של סוס אציל . אבו פריח משתמשת בקלישאות מערביות על מיניות מזרחית ועל טבע/תרבות .
הסוס, דימוי לפרא אציל , לאמביוולנטיות כלפי ראשוניות -קדמוניות המזרח ומה שנתפס גם כאנכרוניזם מובנה בו. העבודה המוקרנת כמיצב בפינת החדר נדמת כקטע המתייחס לאינספור סרטים, ספרים, ציורים וגם הפקות אופנה ופרסומות, שמשתמשים העוסקים במזרח מדומיין לשרטט קסם וזרות שצפונה בו הבטחה לפריקת עול לצד חיזוק תחושת עליונות של המתבונן מבחוץ . אבו פריח מזקקת תפיסות אלו לקלישאות הבסיסיות ביותר, מגחכת אותן לכדי קריקטורה מקסימה . יהיה מסקרן לעקוב אחרי עבודתה בהמשך.
העבודה הזו בלטה בתערוכת הבוגרות (והבוגר) שנערכה בגלריה שלוש לצד עבודות של מימי טסמה סיבהו שהציגה עבודת טקסטיל וחנה אמר שיצרה קשת מקפסולות קפה . מעבר לכך התערוכה, שאמנם הייתה מצומצמת בהיקפה דמתה, על הטוב ועל הרע, לאלו של שאר בתי הספר שהציגו תערוכות בוגרים. היא הזכירה והדגישה את הצורך להמשיך ולקיים את המחלקה ב”ספיר” כאמירה על מקומה של תרבות גם בדרום הארץ, לשמר את הלך הרוח .

The South is a state of mind / Graduates of the Sapir Academic College School of Art
The discussion on Orientalism takes on an interesting look when it is used ironically by those who are frequently its objects: Middle Eastern women. In the 2018 graduates’ exhibition, The South is a state of mind, the camera in Hala Abbu Parich’s video loop, “Red Dancing” documents a performance of a woman dancer in fiery red alternating with shots of a noble horse. Abbu Parich uses western clichés about Eastern sexuality and on nature and culture. The horse, metaphor for the “noble savage,” ambivalence towards the ancient, primordial nature of the East as well as what is perceived as its built-in anarchism. The work, projected as a performance where two corners of the room meet, seems like a clip referring to numerous films, books, paintings, fashion shows and advertisements using an imaginary East to depict magic and its embodied alien aspect. The “otherness” is a mute promise of easing of restraints alongside of reinforcement of the feeling of superiority by the one who gazes from outside. Abbu Parich distils these perceptions into the most basic clichés, rendering them ridiculous and making them into a charming caricature. An artist to watch.
