The image was sent to me on WhatsApp, received among a stream of messages, pictures, jokes and clips. Something about the photo made me stop and go back for a closer look, leading me to diverge from my longstanding decision of not writing about an artwork based only on a photograph of it.
\nThe image of a crutch in art brings me back to the images of the war-wounded painted by Georg Grosz in the early 20th century in Germany, following the carnage of the Great War. The wounded flooded Europe, with Grosz mostly painting street scenes of Berlin with grotesque sights of suffering, ugliness, evil and their polar opposites. Images of prosthetics and crutches reappear again and again in his oeuvre, replacements for missing limbs.
\nKav, the singular form of the word for \u201ccrutches\u201d in Hebrew (kabayim) refers to a volumetric measurement used during the Talmudic era (c. 3rd century CE), one of a pair of crutches used for walking and for movement. In Berkowitz\u2019s Untitled (crutches and branch), 2020, the crutch is a ladder or a link, a figure leaning to the side. Out of the dead wood, intended to replace a living limb, a dry branch bound with masking tape protrudes and bends over, embodying the memory of movement.<\/p>\n

The crutches enfold a narrative of limitations of movement and the extent to which we are currently engaged in issues of movement, after becoming aware of the official 100m radius around one\u2019s home as the border of movement, as directed by the government. Berkowitz placed one crutch atop the other like a rising ladder which sways and resists on its single leg up to the bandaged point of the patched connection to the dry branch with its stored memory of budding.
\nThere is an obvious link to Arte Povera, and in the future we may be able to walk the path of memory on this work, but right now, its direct poetry, melancholy and beauty carry clearly across through the photograph.<\/p>\n
