Aura 3 <\/em>by Barak Ravitz, a blue massage chair surrounded by neon tubing, succeeds in presenting itself as a throne as well as an electric chair, both mystical chariot and memento of life\u2019s fragility. If the electricity fails, the light \u2013 the protective, glowing aura surrounding the chair \u2013\u2013 would disappear immediately, leaving it lifeless, a body without a soul.<\/p>\n

\u201cAura\u201d is a word frequently heard in spiritual circles, meaning the halo around a saint\u2019s head or the invisible bands of light surrounding the body. Light also refers to various types of cancer treatments, and appears to the seeker in quests for spiritual meaning, whether through religion, an alternative belief system, or a search for a way to minimize chaos in the body. In Art world idiosyncratic language, Walter Benjamin’s term of the aura of the art object as its singularity\u00a0 comes to mind as well.\u00a0 Ravitz\u2019s unusual, excellent work reflects all of these aspects.<\/p>\n

Illness and healing (or lack of healing) arise from this semi-medical object as a disrupted narrative. The massage chair is a representation of a body, but its proportions are outsized and robotic. Viewers can immediately see \u201clegs,\u201d \u201cpelvis,\u201d \u201cspine,\u201d \u201cchest,\u201d \u201carms,\u201d and, of course, a \u201chead.\u201d The body\/chair confronts viewers frontally, with a festive, regal air (resonating with its color of Royal Blue). On a massage chair, the patient usually faces backwards, with the head resting on the round, blue, cushion; here, the neon transforms it into a shocking, cheap, cold, and mechanical saint\u2019s halo.<\/p>\n

The work\u2019s power lies in its anthropomorphism, the similarity to the human body, simultaneously touching and threatening, which becomes somewhat \u201cuncanny\u201d (Freud\u2019s term \u201cUmheimlich\u201d) as a distant memory which is made present. Ravitz\u2019s chair seems almost to embody the quality of strangeness found in mannequins: a blend of familiar and alienated, of what is perceived by the senses with what refuses to be translated into an ontological statement. In this context, we can think about Lacan\u2019s expansion of Freud\u2019s concept of the \u201cUmheimlich,\u201d describing strangeness as a state of disruption of values and sensations. Aura 3 <\/em>generates a response of attraction\/repulsion: it is a machine for pleasure, healing, and release with the potential for pain and surrender. The soft upholstered chair evokes an intense sensation of latent violence and coercion.<\/p>\n
