Meydad Eliyahu \/ Threshold<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Meydad Eliyahu\u2019s new exhibition there are some wonderful moments along with the sensation that it remains on the threshold, like its title, without completely solving the issue of the relationship between its three components: paintings based on photographs, walls constructed as platforms, and several splendid objects. Eliyahu crosses the threshold between \u201cinteresting and beautiful\u201d and realms of excitement, sensuousness, and what is imprinted in one\u2019s memory through the objects.<\/p>\n

Meydad Eliyahu \/ Threshold<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Eliyahu engages in cultural transition and longing. These issues which were key issues in international art (until the Corona pandemic), art engaging in immigration and the experience of being refugees with unprecedented intensity. The case which Eliyahu observes is the move by the Jews of Cochin, India, to the young State of Israel in the 1950s, an especially complicated wave of immigration. The Jews of Cochin moved to Israel voluntarily, unlike refugees escape from ethnic persecution, famine, or war; they underwent an absorption process by the government institutions, but were marginalized to a low position in the hierarchy of Israeli identities. In Eliyahu\u2019s installation \u201cThe tree planters\u2019 dance\u201d which was part of the exhibition \u201cIntricate Affinities: Recollections of Western Tradition in Local Contemporary Art\u201d (2016) at the Petach Tikva Museum of Art, which I curated, the artist engaged in Israeli history. He made present the repressed pain that refused to subside in the rural communities of Cochin Jews in Israel, such as Mesillat Zion, where he grew up.<\/p>\n

Meydad Eliyahu \/ Threshold<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The objects on the threshold, fragments of decorative architectural elements and images of ritual objects of the Jews of Cochin, especially the pomegranate-shaped embellishments for the Torah scrolls, are very moving. Eliyahu places them in the blue wall niches he constructed, as if in clouds of consolation in the river of memory, and suffuses them with red, enveloped in pigment.
\nThe cultural encounter\/memory thus formed is multilayered and firmly planted in history and art history, saturated with sensuousness and love, with an almost fetishistic attitude to the material. Eliyahu makes breathtaking use of a color that is not frequently used in Israel art; a sweeping generalization would characterize it, even today, as restrained coloration. The red and blue refer to the colors used in art history to depict the Virgin Mary whose figure embodies mercy; the rich, velvety pigment as in Anish Kapoor\u2019s works (an artist who immigrated to Israel from India in the 1970s and continued to the UK) creates a crispiness and the feeling of danger, as if a slight breeze could remove the rich coloration along with its charm and softness. The objects denote disaster, from the memory of the vessels from the Holy Temple depicted on the Arch of Titus, a persistent memory in the Jewish collective unconscious, to photographs from the Holocaust of desecrated ritual objects. Beyond all of the above, beyond the story of immigration is a story of the disaster. Out of the fragments, Meydad Eliyahu has created precious objects conveying long lost riches and past satiety, a breathtaking depiction of the fading of a forgotten culture.
