Sharon Shpurer\u2019s report in HaMakom<\/em> (https:\/\/www.ha-makom.co.il\/post-sharon-new-luski\/<\/a>) on Haim Deuel Lusky\u2019s history of sexual harassment, which everyone knew about for decades, constitutes a break, perhaps a tectonic rift in the power structure that became a fixture of the Israeli art world. Perhaps is a shift in more ways than one.<\/p>\n

Michal Na\u2019aman is one of the people whom Shpurer spoke with as she prepared the report. Five days after the first article, as well as transcripts of conversations with Yair Garbuz, Gilad Melzer, Dror Daum, Gabi Klasmer, Nir Hacohen, Oded Yedaya, and Arieh Hammer. Na\u2019aman spoke about her new insights after the ugly truths were revealed about Boaz Arad and his suicide. \u201cIt took me time to realize that this whole thing about authority relations was not OK, and that people should be very careful about this…it didn’t seem wrong to me. Only after Boaz Arad\u2019s suicide did I began to understand that this was apparently not OK.\u201d Again and again Na\u2019aman repeated the words \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d \u2013 Na\u2019aman, who founded her status as an intellectual artist on those words. The phrase is repeated no less than four times in the very short interview, in addition to plenty of \u201cmaybes,\u201d \u201cI wasn\u2019t aware,\u201d and more. It interests me especially to think about the statement, \u201cYou\u2019re bringing up memories in me that weren\u2019t even traumatic for me,\u201d which Na\u2019aman said to Shpurer in response to a question about a complaint she heard (or didn\u2019t hear) about Lusky.<\/p>\n

Her statement reminded me of her artworks The Cook, Vanya (Vajzatha), <\/em>and Vai Hi Oh, <\/em>all made by Na\u2019aman in 1975. Years ago when I first saw them\u00a0 at her 1999 retrospective in the Tel aviv museum , I thought that a voluntary blindness mechanism was applied to them, a certain reading which became typical of Israeli art. The image of a woman\u2019s lower body appears repeatedly, the woman\u2019s legs encased in boots are spread wide, her panties and rolled stockings pulled down to her knees. The figure\u2019s short skirt barely covers her crotch. This is a harsh, violent, \u201cdirty \u201cimage. In The Cook, <\/em>the figure is centered in the upper third, in place of the head of an imaginary figure. The writing is a translation from Shakespeare\u2019s King Lear \u201cCry to it, nuncle,\u00a0as the\u00a0cockney did\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0eels when she\u00a0put ’em i’ the paste alive; she knapped \u00a0\u2018em\u00a0 o\u2019 the\u00a0coxcombs with a\u00a0stick\u00a0and\u00a0cried\u00a0\u2018Down, wantons, down!\u2019 (2.2.310\u00ad12).\u201d Shakespeare compared a wretched life to a pie ruined by a cook who failed to kill the eels before placing them in the dough. The pathetic aspect of the defeated, insulted, desecrated body and horrifying text, with its hints so wonderfully clear (the enigma of how eels reproduce engaged the curiosity of young Sigmund Freud) create a painful distress that is also generated by Vanya (Vajezatha)<\/em> (1975). The work features a duplicated image looking like a reel of documentary film of humiliation. Next to it are photographs of a fan, with the legend labeling the legs \u201cVanya\u201d and the fan \u201cVajezatha\u201d to create a tasteless joke about the addition of the Hebrew letter zayin, <\/em>enfolding an allusion to the name of Haman\u2019s son, marginally mentioned in the Book of Esther<\/em>. In Vai Hi Oh<\/em> (1975), the figure of the woman with the legs spread is placed over the picture of the fan and the picture of an animal that looks like a hamster, an animal that reproduces rapidly, with the fragments spelling out Vai, Hi,<\/em> and Oh<\/em> above. Very little was written about these pieces. In the catalog of Na\u2019aman\u2019s 1999 retrospective exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, David Ginton wrote that the words Vai Hi Oh<\/em> contain the letters of God\u2019s secret name as well as sounding like sounds called out during orgasm.\u00a0 He also wrote that the fan was an image of sexual arousal, castration, and death. His analysis referred to the central image offhandedly as \u201cthe woman who pulls down her panties\u201d \u2013 as if this were an active act of will, while the image in this and other works is passive and painful, arousing disgust and pity in equal measure. Perhaps we should wonder what crime has been repressed here and what has not been said. Who pulled the woman\u2019s panties down by force? Who placed her in the uncomfortable position that is repeated again and again?<\/p>\n

The convenient blindness emerges as well in the conversation with Garbuz, who appears to have slight amnesia regarding his many years as head of the Midrasha at Beit Berl, from 1997 to 2008. At first, responding to Shpurer\u2019s question about complaints against Lusky, he said \u201cMy memory is by now not so great at details. But I really don\u2019t remember something like that.\u201d He repeated this several times, and after refreshing his memory added that there was something \u201creally little, but I remembered that a young woman came in to the office with her parents when I was director of the Midrasha 14 years ago. Something like that. She said to me that she was extremely uncomfortable in Haim Lusky\u2019s class.\u201d A really little thing? Just the fact that the student had to be accompanied by her parents should have rung some alarms. A quick survey of my colleagues did not find a single incident in which a student needed her parents for a meeting. How much support and accompaniment must that brave student have needed to have been able to demand \u2013 albeit in too soft a voice \u2013 her right to study without being harassed. Garbuz also gave crude quantification to the incident, twice calling it \u201clittle\u201d and once \u201creally little.\u201d \u201cI remembered that she was sitting with her parents, who were very friendly, and she was very upset.\u201d Lucky he didn\u2019t call her \u201chysterical\u201d \u2013 a word with its own long, documented misogynist history.<\/p>\n

The conversations with Melzer, former head of the academic studies at the Midrasha, and with Klasmer, former director, and with present head of the Midrasha Nir Hacohen, are no less problematic.<\/p>\n

Their statements reek of a sense of superiority and mastery along with slight amnesia which seems to have spread like an epidemic. Melzer \u201cdoesn\u2019t remember anything like that [i.e., complaint against Lusky.- S.S.<\/em>]. I held the position at the Midrash until 2008, that\u2019s 12 years ago. The chance that I\u2019d remember such an incident is slight.\u201d Klasmer: \u201cI\u2019m trying to remember\u2026I don\u2019t know, maybe it was before I was there\u2026\u201d Hacohen: \u201cI don\u2019t remember specific details. I simply don\u2019t know to say yes or no. Maybe\u2026\u201d That is what he said as head of the institution during a conference at which a student stood up and said that she doesn\u2019t come in on the days when a specific lecturer is at work.<\/p>\n

My feeling of disgust only grew stronger as a read the report, a feeling that is repeated when I think about the institutions that are taking no action even now: Lusky\u2019s course on psychoanalysis and contemporary French philosophy is scheduled to be given in the second semester of the multidisciplinary program in the humanities at the Tel Aviv University, according to the curriculum posted online. (The embarrassing standards began to be firmly established when the university invited Haim Ramon to teach in 2019 even after he was convicted of sexual crimes. Apparently these standards are now the norm). It is unclear and saddening that Haaretz<\/em> was silent on the most discussed topic in Israeli art circles as more incidents involving Boaz Arad and Roi Tziki Arad were revealed. There is also a deafening silence by the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design and others about sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

Back to 1975, to Michal Na\u2019aman\u2019s artworks. In an interview, Garbuz said that his friends from the 1960s, \u201870s and \u201880s \u201care some of the most important artists in Israel. Not a single one of them behaved properly. That\u2019s clear. But I would never give up their art.\u201d Maybe Garbuz and I do not agree on who the most important artists are, but it\u2019s clear that the spirit of those whom Garbuz deems important is what dictated the reading of art.
