\u201cPainter-Gatherer,\u201d the exhibition by Yisrael Dror Hemed, winner of the Haim Shiff Prize for Figurative and Realistic Art for the Year 2020 at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, together with Roni Taharlev\u2019s painting from the exhibition \u201cSkein,\u201d also in the Museum, and two paintings by Guy Levy at the Rubin Museum, form a mass of disappointing paintings generating melancholy thoughts about the state of the medium.<\/p>\n

It is easy to write about these works using the lexicon which in the past formed the radical discourse of gender and identity. At present, it seems they form a pre-condition these are the buzzwords, and many times an ultra-conservative wolf in sheep\u2019s clothing. The engagement with homoeroticism, gender liquidity, or a quote in the spirit of 1980s postmodernism, can be interesting and justified if accomplished through good painting. The problem is that it is far from the truth regarding the three cases. Hemed\u2019s painting Supper, <\/em>hanging in the hallway of the museum\u2019s new wing, is reminiscent of an infinite number of worn out visual jokes about the Last Supper, such as seen in posters in tourist souvenir shops.<\/p>\n

Hemed\u2019s painting of a man in the pose of a classical statue (Spinario, <\/em>man extracting a thorn), is also a lame visual joke on the same level. These and other paintings lack good \u201cpainterliness\u201d \u2013 a quality whose definition is much more elusive than contemporaneity or the long list of artists mentioned in the wall text, from Caravaggio and Cezanne through Manet and Hockney. The paintings on exhibit are flat and empty, like a stage set simulating an exhibition.<\/p>\n

Roni Taharlev\u2019s Boy in a Yellow Dress<\/em>, on view in \u201cSkein,\u201d the Tel Aviv Museum\u2019s exhibition of New Acquisitions for the Bruce and Ruth\u00a0Rappaport\u00a0Israeli Art\u00a0Collection, suffers from the \u201csecond-rate syndrome\u201d characterizing most of the exhibition, which is comprised of especially weak works by good artists. Taharlev, who exhibited many excellent works over recent years, is here represented by an apologetic work, a painting whose entry ticket to the exhibition is its engagement with gender.<\/p>\n

Similar to Hemed, Guy Levy\u2019s Wild Flower<\/em> is a reminder of lesser aspects of postmodernism. His quotation of Klimt\u2019s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer<\/em> (1907) including the famous jewelled collar, in the painting Wild Flower <\/em>of a woman against the backdrop of Old Jaffa with a Reuven Rubinesque donkey at her side, or the use of Louis Vuitton logo on the ribbon decorating three Graces alongside paintings of Hamsa<\/em> good luck symbols, are superficial, stereotypical statements about East and West. Good painting, painting whose essence does not lie in the degree of precision with which the painter chooses to \u201ccopy\u201d the world but the way in which the painter creates a world, often redeems banal thoughts and ideas. It only takes a thought about the differences between innumerable paintings of the Last Supper and the memorable, exciting ones. These exhibitions lack such \u201credemption,\u201d leaving canvas and paint to remain as\u00a0hangers\u00a0 for ideas that are no more than the new conformism.<\/p>\n
