The splendor of the Pool of the Arches\u00a0 comes into view as the visitor descends the narrow staircase. It is a high-ceilinged space with numerous arches and light gleaming on the water, refracting into a variety of patterns. Visitors are ensconced in a womblike space from which they will ascend to the world outside.<\/p>\n<p>In the installation, Zlekha Levy transforms this secluded reality, the womb within the space, into a site of introspection, turning inwards and opening outwards. Viewers standing on the pier or in the rowboats are surrounded by images and sounds. <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong> touches upon multiple strata of associations, emotions, and memories, moving between interior and exterior, past and present.<\/p>\n<p>The Pool of the Arches was inaugurated in 789 BCE, during the Muslim rule of Palestine-Eretz Israel, as part of the sophisticated water system developed under the reign of Caliph Haroun al-Rashid. <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong> bridges differences in time and culture. Video and sound, Zlekha Levy\u2019s artistic tools, are relatively recent. Sound works have been considered as part of the visual arts since the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century (originating with avant-garde artists such as the Italian Futurists and the Dadaists), while video began to develop in the early 1960s. Their use within an historical site, referencing Muslim and Jewish culture, creates a breathtaking experience.<\/p>\n<p>Two images of musical instruments are the visual anchors of the installation: projected onto the walls of the Pool are an opening of an oud\u2019s resonance box, and a frame drum. These are ancient instruments common to the entire Mediterranean and Asia. The oud is pictured as an impossible view from its interior, looking out of from one of the latticed openings of the oud, its patterns reflecting and refracting in the water. The eleven strings of the oud, five double and one single, are moved by an invisible hand. Since the 1990s, as so-called Mediterranean music became part of Israeli music\u2019s mainstream, the oud spread beyond Arab communities and Jewish communities with roots in Arab countries, to become popular in wider circles.<\/p>\n<p>The frame drum is apparently older than the oud, with numerous variations in size and material. Zlekha Levy projects an image of a drum, with an obscured beating hand. The projections are focuses, acting as emotional vanishing points. They are reminiscent of rose windows in churches, such as those seen in the nearby Franciscan Monastery of St. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Church windows embody the memory of the oculus \u2013 the round window atop domes in pagan or Islamic structures, dating from the ancient world. The major visual motif in <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong> encapsulates references to multiple eras and cultures, forming an illusion of infinity.<\/p>\n<p>Hebrew and Arabic music and song are heard at eight points throughout the Pool. Several systems of time and motion are operated in <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong> like meshed cogs. Zlekha Levy proposes an additional time measurement system parallel to the standard one of seconds, minutes, and hours. The pieces of music \u2013 liturgical poems and songs &#8211; include interludes of silence.<\/p>\n<p>The manifestations of playing the musical instruments form another time measurement system. The reflections of the projections moving across the water are impacted by the movement of the rowboats through the water and the resonance. The sound takes on form for a split second. During the moments of silence, the sounds of the water and the urban environment will stand out and become more distinct. The sounds of the oars, cars on the street level, breathing, and perhaps speech and movement, turn visitors turned into participants in the artwork. Inside and outside merge, flooded repeatedly with the sound of the songs. The allocation of a function to silence evokes John Cage\u2019s composition \u201c4:33\u201d (1952), written after the American composer visited a soundproof room and researched the fundamentals of silence. He concluded that silence does not truly exist; what does exist are conditions that are formed under which we can hear other sounds. <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong> engages in listening, in the ability to tune in to the less familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors in the rowboats passing through sound zones of Hebrew and Arabic song may be able to identify words in the different languages and experience the intonations. The melody is the same, or at least very similar, but the contents are not a translation. Liturgical poets borrowed and adapted Arabic melodies for Hebrew <em>piyyutim<\/em>, often using homophones (words with similar sound but different meaning). The nonmaterial sounds accompany the rowers, expressing yearning and closeness. In this womb of dreams, inside the Pool, perhaps a hope for new relations between the two cultures will arise.<\/p>\n<p>Sound and music, two abstract elements which are present, take on material qualities in <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong>. Although sound is invisible, it defines space distinguishing between the area in which it is audible and where it is not heard. The amplifiers descend from the ceiling of the Pool through which pails were let down to draw water from the reservoir in the distant past. Sound may be said to replace water: the vital element for physical existence is replaced by an element that quenches spiritual thirst. Some of the songs, like \u201c<em>Yefat \u2018ayin libavtini\u201d<\/em> and \u201c<em>Yesh li gan\u201d <\/em>(I have a garden and a well have I), are set to music by renowned composer Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Masloub, while others are by anonymous composers. The melodies, written for Arabic songs, were adapted to Hebrew <em>piyyutim<\/em> (liturgical poems). In the case of <em>Yefat \u2018ayin libavtini, <\/em>a secular Hebrew poem by Bialik was added \u2013 \u201c<em>Yesh li gan\u201d <\/em>(I have a garden and a well have I). The viewer\u2019s location in the space creates a unique experience at any given moment, when the Hebrew or Arabic song is heard in different sound zones.<\/p>\n<p>Zlekha Levy creates a \u201cthird space,\u201d actually creating multiple \u201cthird spaces.\u201d This is a concept coined by cultural researcher Homi K. The <em>piyyutim<\/em> \u201c<em>Lama <\/em><em>h<\/em><em>aketz<\/em>\u201d ]why is the (time of) Redemption hidden?] and \u201c<em>Arach zmani<\/em>\u201d [It has been a long time] address the longings for Redemption. These are liturgical poems sung in synagogues and concert halls by leading <em>payyetanim<\/em> such as Moshe Havusha, Zion Yehezkel, and Yehiel Nahari.<\/p>\n<p>Bialik\u2019s poem \u201cI have a garden, and a well have I\u201d is the only secular song in Hebrew and includes erotic imagery (\u2026And atop my well a bucket is hung\/Every Sabbath my beloved comes\/and drinks fresh water from my jug\u201d\u2026) resonating associations of romantic encounters at a water source, such as the early biblical stories of Jacob and Rachel, Moses and Zipporah, meeting at a well.<\/p>\n<p>The Arabic songs are poems of love and passion, well known and very popular in the Arab speaking world, sung at joyous occasions and special events. Many are associated with major musicians, such as <em>Marmar Zamani<\/em> (It has been a long time) identified with Lebanese diva Fairouz, while \u201c<em>Ah yah hilu ya messalini\u201d <\/em>(O you of the beautiful eyes) and \u201cYa tira tiri\u201d are especially famous in renditions by iconic Syrian singer Sabah Fakhri (1933-2021).<\/p>\n<p>Although the Pool of the Arches is a secular structure, it evokes religious architecture, and boasts the aura and the splendor of the best examples of the latter. A reservoir of water is associated with the Jewish ritual bath, Christian baptism, and the purification ritual before prayer in Islam. All engage with the formless yet present material (similar to music), identified as purifying, generating change, and bridging the sacred and the mundane. <strong><em>Reflection<\/em><\/strong> revolves around\u00a0 the relationship between voice and sound, the audience and the space.
