Anna Hayat and Slava Pirsky\u2019s photographs are exquisite. Most are printed on fabric, some are fragmented and sewn by hand, while others are embroidered with threads flowing down. This is the first time that the duo is exhibiting sewn images which are simultaneously joined and breaking apart. They have an almost corporeal quality, their stitches seemingly throbbing with pain like a wounded body.<\/p>\n

Their photographs of wildflowers and empty primordial landscapes were photographed in the environs of Modiin, where the artists live, adjacent to Ramle. A photograph of wild thistles is sewn onto military tent canvas as a petrifying collage of aridity, grief, and survival. Time itself becomes matter, an additional element in the photograph that comprises past and present.
\nThe density of Time is evident in works depicting flowers such as the peonies in Death of Marat<\/em> or the single flower standing on a shell case in Rose. <\/em>Time and gravity overwhelm the petals that preserve an almost decadent softness and nobility. Hayat & Pirsky do not succumb to clich\u00e9, but distill the core of clich\u00e9d images and objects and re-illuminate them.
\nThe discourse on Time is a central motif and essence of their works. The photographs are made with a large-format view camera on Polaroid film stock no longer in production since 2007. The outdated chemicals leave random stains on the image, hinting at and signifying its future breakdown. The works resemble early analog photographs. Hayat & Pirsky add a touch of solarization to some of the pieces by exposing them to the sun, which creates an uncontrolled reaction. The uniqueness of their oeuvre lies in the way in which chance is present together with the influence of controlled, precise, intensive photography, such as by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, two beacons of modern American early 20th<\/sup> century photography. The integration of acute precision, of photography that \u201csees\u201d more than the eye, along with the acceptance and the place given to the unexpected, is magnificent.
\nSewing the photographs, a new process for Hayat & Pirsky, followed their interest in Kintsugi \u2013 the Japanese art of \u201cgolden repair\u201d of broken pottery. It emphasizes the joints, preserving the vessel\u2019s history without attempting to conceal flaws. The use of embroidery and stitching in the photographs creates works between 2-D and 3-D, between smooth and wounded surfaces. The works resonate a sense of urgency and injury. They were made as the artists closely followed the war in Ukraine that \u00a0is directly impacting the lives of their friends and relatives.
\nThe artistic language the duo developed since beginning to work together in 1999 conducts a continuous dialogue between photography and painting. The Death of Marat<\/em> is a direct reference to French Neo-Classical painter Jean-Louis David\u2019s La Mort de Marat <\/em>(1793). The painting depicts Marat, one of the leaders of the French Revolution, murdered in his bathtub at home. David imbued the painting with Christian iconography (especially in its similarity to Michelangelo\u2019s Pieta<\/em> (1499), now in the Vatican). Hayat & Pirsky placed a wreath of peonies horizontally in a position of surrender as if defeated in battle, with patches, joints, and unraveled threads intensifying a melancholic feeling of despair arising from the image.<\/p>\n
