Ruthi Helbitz Cohen \u2013 And then the silence<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ruthi Helbitz Cohen\u2019s works focus on issues of femininity, gender, equality, and cultural structures of women\u2019s images. Her figures are based on primordial sources – mythologies and stories \u2013 and on their various incarnations in art and popular culture, such as Walt Disney films. Helbitz Cohen\u2019s intensive artworks narrate stories, nightmares, dreams, and legends \u2013 at times painfully. These images are seemingly vocal, as if reciting poetry, screaming, and murmuring utterances, acting as independent entities seeking their pathway through the world.<\/p>\n

Three large works combining drawing and collage form the core of the exhibition. The huge fabric sheets (each about six meters high) create a space within a space, demarcating a diffused area. Elliptical mirrors, stained and painted, are placed on the floor, simultaneously reflecting the artworks and the viewer, connecting life and art in one ephemeral image.<\/p>\n

The installation delineates a chaotic universe: at its center is an Hourglass,<\/em> the figure of a woman holding an hourglass in one arm while her second is marked with thin lines. What may be a heart or perhaps a fetus emerges at the end of one of these lines, creating a conspicuous awareness that what should be protected is exposed. Henry Ford Hospital <\/em>(1932) and The Two Fridas <\/em>(1939), two masterpieces by Frida Kahlo, come to mind with their use of direct symbolic language \u2013 heart and fetus.<\/p>\n

A huge bird hovering over bodies of beheaded women is the central image in Aqueduct. <\/em>The vulture or maybe an eagle brings to mind symbols of repressive regimes which usually victimize women. The aqueduct, whose function is to enable life, is entirely broken down. In Milk and Honey and Milk, <\/em>Bird of Paradise flowers (Strelitzia reginae)<\/em> stand by a heart and internal organs hovering over the canvas in a contemporary version of the Danse Macabre a medieval allegory about the universality of death.<\/p>\n

These artworks reflect facets of feminine existence arise: motherhood, beauty, constant fear of withering and a constant shadow of bereavement and violence. Notwithstanding the figures\u2019 gentleness and fragility, they are formidable and sometimes royal, as in The Hourglass.<\/em> The fabric evokes a theatre curtain, a common metaphor that is fitting.<\/p>\n

Lines and patches of color compose Bluebell <\/em>and Mata Hari, <\/em>portraits of women whose names are associated with legends. \u00a0Bluebell <\/em>is the commonly accepted Hebrew name for Rapunzel from the Brothers Grimm\u2019s fairy tales, whom a wicked witch imprisoned in a castle. Communication with the outside world was through her long braid descending from her prison tower. Mata Hari <\/em>was the stage name of the Dutch exotic dancer accused of spying for Germany in World War I and executed,<\/p>\n

For the first time, Helbitz Cohen is exhibiting a staged photograph: Tomer Sapir, artist and friend, is seen in the photographs enveloped in a paper dress taken from the Hourglass<\/em>, the active installation. The dress made of painted cutouts of body parts, is very delicate yet terrifying. The paper dress covering Sapir seems to be like the cocoon encasing a chrysalis which becomes a butterfly. The interface between the male body and between Helbitz Cohen\u2019s paper dresses raises issues of gender and power, and our ability to understand and identify. The photograph commemorates an action, extracting it from the time continuum.<\/p>\n

On the initiative of the Contemporary Art Center Ramle-CACR, in association with the Open House in Ramle and the Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue, Helbitz Cohen conducted workshops for women from diverse communities. Together they created the piece \u201cRadiant Beauty,\u201d installed in the Open House in Ramle simultaneously with the exhibition. In the workshops, participants made paper tears and wrote down their thoughts, questions, and short stories. The tears are pasted to each other, cradling secrets.<\/p>\n

With intensity and challenge, with exposure, fears, and doubts, Helbitz Cohen\u2019s women seek answers, perhaps refuge.<\/p>\n
