<\/a>Haran Kislev – Distilled Expression of Unmediated Emotion.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>

Haran Kislev <\/a>\u2019s paintings lingered in my mind for a long time after leaving his temporary studio in Artport, Tel Aviv. It is impossible to avoid seeing them in the context of the horrific experience he and his family underwent during the massacre of October 7, 2023 as related in Haaretz .<\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Sensations of chaos, wildness, violence, confusion, are associated with stories and images of the slaughter that cannot be extracted from the consciousness of those who were not even there, nor from those who visited the destroyed villages and kibbutzim. However, the emotional directness in his heavily painted almost sculptural paintings has characterized his works for years.<\/p>

From many aspects, Kislev\u2019s works are unique in the field of Israeli art, offering abstraction as an alternative in a scene in which narrative and symbolic painting has become the default. Works from his destroyed studio in Kibbutz Be\u2019eri were salvaged with the assistance of Ahim Laneshek [\u201cBrothers-in-Arms\u201d organization) after the massacre.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Without Kislev\u2019s comments, it is impossible to guess which works are from which time period,\u00a0 which express anxieties, or memories and fear based on reality. \u00a0Observing Kislev\u2019s works, the gaze becomes lost in the mountains of paint, making it difficult to decide where to focus. Kislev discards narrative details and anything that is not in the distilled expression of unmediated emotion. His works seem to crash again and again on the rocks of tremendous emotions which are the greatest generators of action: love and fear.<\/p>

Kislev tends to overlook the limits of his canvas. The paints are thick and rich, heaped up and exposed, pouring over the edges to dry in uneven waves.\u00a0 One can always launch into the never-ending Israeli discourse on borders \u2013 but at present I will consider his refusal to acknowledge borders as a sign of unbearable sanity, an inability to contain the banks of emotion, paint, and movement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

For years, Kislev has been mining his internal consciousness, making landscapes which are far more than homage to external views. They are internal landscapes, raising pure colors from the subconscious. He also makes collages \u2013 paintings comprised of previous paintings that he cuts into strips of memory to construct archaeological mounds of sensation. \u00a0Other works are sculptures in paint on irregular formats with shapes reminiscent of Hilma Af Klint <\/a>, Brancusi, or Jean Arp. These works are to be framed in wooden boxes to form a barrier between them and the world, to make sure they are kept safe and whole.<\/p>

The works will be exhibited in December in the Mishkan Museum of Art, Ein Harod.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
