the back of a woman\u2019s head is the memory of the performance 1936 \u201cThe Surrealist Phantom.\u201d In Betzer\u2019s paintings \u00a0a woman\u2019s loose bun, entwined with leaves and flowers, surrounded by clouds, conveys the certain discomfort \u00a0an obscured face creates . The Jewish concept of God\u2019s \u201chidden face\u201d resonates throughout, and it seems that the phrase \u201cHis no-face coming towards me,\u201d the title of Avraham Halfi\u2019s book (1966) quoted by Betzer in the gallery text, is very fitting. \u201cThe Surrealist Phantom\u201d was a beautiful, enigmatic installation exhibited at the opening of the International Surrealist exhibition in 1936, the first in England. Sheila Legge stood in Trafalgar Square with her face covered with a mask of roses. Legge passed away young and was nearly forgotten, despite her image \u00a0rein the Surrealist movement. Claude Cahun, the track blazing artist, photographed Legge,( and also participated in the exhibition). Legge dressed as a bride but with long black gloves, her face covered with flowers, may be a mourning wreath and certainly a sexual reference, stood in the center of Trafalgar square that very embodiment \u00a0the British imperialsim, surrounded by pigeons. This image is still poignant even after nearly a century.<br \/>The \u00a0performance was apparently \u00a0inspired by Dali\u2019s 1935 painting, Woman with a Head of Roses, which impacted additional artists, among them Magritte, that continued using to motive for years to come \u00a0\u00a0such as in The Great War (1964).
