<\/a>Four intriguing national pavilions \u2013 Venice 2024<\/strong><\/h3>

The American Pavilion
Jeffrey Gibson\u00a0 \u2013 The space in which to place me<\/strong><\/p>

Jeffrey Gibson is the first Native American artist to represent the USA with a solo exhibition in the national pavilion; he defines himself as queer, as well. Thus, the pavilion is truly in the spirit of the international exhibition. The choice of Gibson reflects the trend of expanding the American cultural field after Simone Leigh exhibited in the previous Biennale with marked success. Leigh is the first African American woman artist to represent the USA.<\/p>

Gibson\u2019s artwork integrates American, Native American, and queer histories with influences of popular music and culture. The pavilion will include paintings, sculptures, multimedia works, and an outdoor installation. Gibson engages in the cultural legacy of Native American nations. A short time after he was invited to represent the USA in Venice the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC where he will install sculptures of the spirits of the tribal forefathers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Brazilian Pavilion<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>
Ka\u2019a P\u00fbera: We are walking birds<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

For the 2024 Biennale, the Brazilian pavilion will be changing its name to the H\u00e3h\u00e3wpu\u00e1 Pavilion, the name the Patax\u00f3 people call the area which is now Brazil. The Patax\u00f3 is one of the peoples who lived there before the Portuguese conquered the country. Glic\u00e9ria Tupinamb\u00e1 who is also a political activist, is the first indigenous artist to represent Brazil at the Biennale. She engages in cultural preservation of the heritage of her tribe, the Tupinamb\u00e1, and conserving the forests being threatened by large financial concerns. In the past she was arrested for her activities battling these forces trying to take over her people\u2019s habitat. Along with video works, her oeuvre comprises objects stemming from religious traditions such as feather robes.<\/p>

Indigenous art in many variations will be central to the international exhibition curated by Adriano Pedrosa, with 10% of the participants from his country, Brazil.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Saudi Pavilion<\/strong>
\u00a0<\/strong>Manal AlDowayan\u00a0 \u2013 Shifting Sands: A Battle Song<\/strong><\/p>

Manal AlDowayan is the third woman artist to represent Saudi Arabia in its pavilion in Venice. Her art practice is directed to advancing the continuous process of change in the status of women in the Saudi kingdom. She creates in sound, sculpture, photography, and audience-participatory installations and performances.<\/p>

In August 2023, AlDowayan exhibited the installation From Shattered Ruins, New Life Shall Bloom <\/em>at the Guggenheim in NYC, engaging in the history of images of women worldwide. Recent exhibitions were held in LA at the LACMA, and in London at the A&V and the British Museum, among other venues.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The French Pavilion<\/strong>
Julien Creuzet: Beyond the Shore<\/strong><\/p>

Julien Cruezet, a Caribbean-French artist who lives and works in Paris will be representing France in the forthcoming Biennale. The selection of an artist engaged in Caribbean-French identity is a good fit with the Biennale\u2019s overarching theme \u201cForeigners Everywhere,\u201d and continues the French pavilion\u2019s line from 2022 when Zineb Sedira, a French-Algerian artist, exhibited there.<\/p>

Cruezet, a sculptor and poet, engages in the concept of \u201cdiaspora\u201d referring to the Caribbean diaspora. He defines his family\u2019s home in Martinique as \u201cthe heart of my imagination,\u201d meaning that his source culture is his major inspiration. Several weeks ago he revealed his Biennale exhibition in a launch in Martinique. He uses found materials, especially plastics and textiles, through which he refers to environmental issues, particularly pollution of the oceans. He also associates pollution with France\u2019s colonial past. Creuzet\u2019s critique of colonialism refers to the very vibrant contemporary French-Caribbean-African culture in France.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
