\u201cWorkout Manual\u201d is an intelligent performance with quite a bit of humor, which observes the roots of Israeli physical culture and hosts many thoughts on the present. The institutionalized Israeli movement notation and its visual analysis began to stand out as a motif in Israeli art of the 1990s. Works by Tiranit Barzilay depicting young men and women in white shirts (such as worn on school ceremonial remembrance days [Holocaust, fallen soldiers] and on Friday evenings in the kibbutzim) were enthusiastically received when exhibited in 1993 immediately after she graduated from Bezalel. By 1995, she had a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Artists such as Hila Ben Ari and \u201cPublic Movement\u201d engaged in the movement and choreography of ceremonies and events for mass audiences including rallies and folk dancing.<\/p>

The work by Aharona Israel originated from an historical study of writings by Zvi Nishri, the first physical education teacher in Gymnasia Herzliya. Nishri was one of the pioneers who renewed the Hebrew language in the field of athletics and wrote extensively on theory and instruction on sports (along with broad public actions in this sphere). In the performance, Israel reads aloud from his books, emphasizing physical education as a tool for creating conformism and philosophical uniformity. Nishri wrote about obedience as well as blind obedience for \u201cthe good of all\u201d \u2013bordering on fascist and totalitarian ideas. In the spirit of the times, the Jewish national movement also took on such philosophical shades along with the ambition to repair everything perceived as the \u201cdistorted Jewish body\u201d (having internalized antisemitic concepts).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The dance piece \u201cWorkout Manual\u201d moves between the present language in which the hedonistic engagement in the body becomes a search for wellness, a spiritual quest through yoga or the martial arts and dance and between the language of fitness designed to shape the \u201cideal\u201d body.<\/p>

The current performance developed out of the video work Lexicon <\/em>currently on view at the Beit Ha\u2019ir-Museum of the History of Tel Aviv-Yafo. The sound accompanying the work is a metronome, while the \u201cexercisers\u201d are seen in a schoolyard, which was the place for sports classes and ceremonies, and \u00a0also mass morning exercises in which the entire school participated. \u00a0The performers oscillate between movements in the rigid old style with uniformity and awareness of someone watching, and between free movement, instead of mass movement, from competitiveness to comradery, individualism instead of the joy of conformity.<\/p>

\u00a0In addition to the texts read aloud in a severe didactic tone of the, the costumes \u2013 especially the girls\u2019 blue shorts with elasticized legs \u2013bloomers- place the performance during the early decades of statehood.
