She is the first Black woman to be appointed curator of the world\u2019s most important contemporary art event, and only the second African-born, following the late Okwui Enwezor (who passed away five years ago) who curated one of the most superb Biennales of the past decades, \u201cAll the World\u2019s Futures\u201d (2015).<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Koyo Kouoh has been active at several of the most important junctures of contemporary art in Africa, including in Dakar, Senegal, where she founded a space for exhibitions and a residency in addition to her career as an independent curator. She follows Adriano Pedrosa, the Biennale\u2019s first curator from South Africa and the first to declare openly that he is queer, who curated the 2024 Biennale, \u201cForeigners Everywhere\u201d (which was especially weak).<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">From other aspects, the appointment of Koyo Kouoh is a nice surprise, generating optimism at a time when various places in the world are drifting towards fascism. There was genuine fear that under Giorgia Meloni\u2019s right wing racist Italian government Biennale would become a bastion of conservatism decorated by art, a doubt that increased when in 2023 Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, a right wing journalist was named president of the Biennale (the umbrella organization of the Biennales of architecture, dance, music, and the Film Festival). Buttafuoco is known as a complicated personality who converted to Islam about a decade ago, among other activities. This time he enabled and warmly congratulated Koyo Kouoh and said that this expresses the Biennale\u2019s mission of being \u201chome of the future,\u201d a statement that echoes Enwezor\u2019s Biennale title, \u201cAll the World\u2019s Futures.\u201d<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">The selection of Kouoh arouses hope for a good Biennale.
