<\/a>Lucid Dreams<\/strong><\/p>

Worth a visit? Definitely YES. \u201cLucid Dreams\u201d is impressive with numerous works, most of which are very interesting. It is \u201ccontemporary\u201d in being eclectic, bridging and connecting eras, places, and mediums, a curatorial approach that has become very acceptable over the past 15 years. Among the most outstanding examples are the \u201cMilk of Dreams\u201d curated by Cecilia Alemani at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) or \u201cHistories,\u201d the series of exhibitions curated by Adriano Pedrosa, curator of the last Biennale at the MoMA and many exhibitions at the New Museum, Sao Paulo, since 2014. Many other exhibitions have been curated in this spirit.<\/p>

Exhibition designer Shirly Yahalomi created an array of rooms leading off from a central hallway ending in a spacious hall. Five spaces each devoted to a theme \u2013 \u201cInterpretation of Dreams,\u201d \u201cDream Stories,\u201d \u201cMuses and Dreamers,\u201d \u201cThe Sleep of Reason\u201d and \u201cDream Laboratory,\u201d each with its own characteristic color and design. The works seem to take on a scale of a home-based exhibition instead of a museum display. Creating diverse viewing experiences was an excellent step, ranging from large-scale works, especially video projections, to small works inviting visitors to view from up close. Curator Dr. Adina Kamien focused the exhibition around the motif of dreaming, from Surrealism through contemporary examples. The association between the historical and the contemporary is not always convincing \u2013 it requires a stretch to attribute Fatma Shanan\u2019s Self portrait on Parquet <\/em>(2019) to Surrealism, despite other works, such as Yifat Bezalel\u2019s Window <\/em>(2023), showing a clear association. The link to Surrealism is obvious in Sharon Balaban\u2019s video Mascara <\/em>(2024). The sliced-off eyelashes hover and float in the center of a white space like a mysterious Israeli sea creature, evoking Dali and Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s 1929 film, Andalusian Dog,<\/em> the Surrealist film which opens with a blade slicing an eyeball.<\/p>

The point of origin for the exhibition is the Dream Object<\/em> (1935) by Andr\u00e9 Breton, \u201cfather of Surrealism\u201d who published the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924. The object, one of about a dozen, is an assemblage of cardboard, photographs, a mirror and additional materials on which he wrote poetry and played with letters. Breton sought to expose and flood a broad range of emotions both conscious and subconscious. The similarity between the structure of the object and the exhibition space, the relationship between concept and physical space, is\u00a0 an excellent idea.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Kamien chose to focus on dreaming, liminal states of consciousness and fantasy. Engagement in these spheres characterized Surrealism during its approximately five decades of activity as a defined movement. Interesting that what is not evoked by the exhibition during this time of continuous war in which we are still experiencing is any reference to the fact that Surrealist movement arose following World War I. World War I, in which many of the artists participated or suffered directly from it, shook the foundations of European culture. Breton, then a medical student who was working in a psychiatric hospital during the war, formulated what many sensed \u2013 diving into the subconscious and the dream world is vital when faced with horrific reality. For many, Surrealism was a revolutionary movement that sought to arouse creative forces which would generate deep social change. This intentionality with its associated political aspects, is absent from the exhibition.<\/p>

The spirit of Surrealism seems to have dictated the decision to display a wide range of objects that would not fit the strict definition of \u201cSurrealist\u201d by members of the movement. Breton referred to the Manifesto of Surrealism as the formal statement of ideas and theories that developed before his time, such as the writings of Guillaume Apollinaire who coined the word \u201cSurrealism\u201d but died six years before the Manifesto was published; writings by Rimbaud, Edgar Allen Poe, and even Dante; as well as visual artists such as Odilon Redon or de Chirico, Henri Rousseau, who may be said to be harbingers of Surrealism and sources of inspiration. The Surrealists were interested in theories and transformative rituals from different places in the world and the connection to objects, such as Shuky Borkovsky\u2019s Dreaming Stones,<\/em> or Egyptian headrests from 2000 BCE are good examples.<\/p>

Many works (such as the headrests) are from the Museum\u2019s collections. Over the past year and a half, Israeli museums have been \u201cmining\u201d their storerooms and bringing up treasures. Although these rediscoveries arose primarily from the near impossibility of obtaining loans from abroad, it is definitely a case of making the best of a bad situation. Thanks to the Vera and Arturo Schwarz Collection, Israel Museum owns wonderful works by Surrealists and their artist friends whose works are in the spirit of Surrealism, especially Marcel Duchamp. Outstanding works from the Collection are Dorothea Tanning\u2019s 1952 painting, Home Light, <\/em>and Man Ray\u2019s The Dream of a Night Key<\/em> (1959).<\/p>

Works by Israeli artists make up a large portion of the exhibition. Some are suffused with the aesthetics of European Surrealism at hits height, such as Nelly Agassi\u2019s series of animated collages and paintings, Ardor<\/em> and Dina Goldstein\u2019s Dreaming Room. <\/em>Goldstein has created a superb combination of cutouts, music, and motion to create a \u201ccabinet of wonders\u201d of stories and dreams inhabiting a space between charming and dark. Her works link to precursors of cinema, which were also part of the fertile ground of the 1920s from which Surrealism sprang.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Several Israeli artworks receive an interesting rereading in the context of this exhibition, such as a lovely photograph by Michal Heiman, very familiar works by Michal Neeman referring directly to the \u201cWolf Man,\u201d one of Freud\u2019s most famous patients, a beautiful photograph by Amon Yariv from 2003 (a pity he has ceased to exhibit as an active artist), a work by Yehudit Sasportas, and a sculpture by Guy Zagursky.<\/p>

The animation and AR works on display along with the excellent collection of brochures, catalogues, and publications of the Surrealists, as well as Islamic and Persian manuscripts, provide strong presence to the exhibition\u2019s statement on Surrealism as an atemporal mode of thinking. It is presented as the embodiment of the universal human soul as formulated by the Surrealist movement, reinforcing its place at the heart of Europocentric mainstream of the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>
