Tali Ratzker\u2019s exhibition is diamond-hard and just as polished. She uses meat and parts of animal corpses to create, beautiful, absurd, and nightmarish compositions. They are dark and sensuous: the viewing experience osscilates\u00a0 between disgust and enchantment. Touching upon death, a motif present overtly or covertly in every artwork, is here carefully enfolded in Mannerist Baroque aesthetics.<\/p>

There are numerous precedents for Ratzker\u2019s works, which can be considered as a metaphorical space of memory populated by dead animals: Dali\u2019s Surrealist Lobster Telephone<\/em> (1936); Jana Sterbak\u2019s Vanitas: Flesh Dress for an Albino Anorectic <\/em>(1987) made of 300 kg of meat; and Sarah Lucas\u2019s Chicken Knickers <\/em>(1997). The above works \u2013\u2013 embody unconcealed violence, but they lack the elegance and almost majesticl beauty that Ratzker creates precisely from the natural material.<\/p>

The tradition of memento mori <\/em>from the more distant past \u2013 the motif of \u201cremember death\u201d that was present as far back as ancient times, and throughout the Middle Ages in Christian art, the Vanitas <\/em>tradition of still life paintings with its warnings of the eventual decay of flourishing life that was especially prevalent in Netherlandish paintings of the 17th century.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Ratzker\u2019s oeuvre refers to the way the animal corpses are used in the food industry, from industrialized food to starred restaurants, animal bodies are re-designed to distance them from the source, or to streamline packing and marketing. Chef restaurants\u00a0 boasting their culinary refinement and serve designed plated portions of animal parts.<\/p>

The engagement with death places Ratzker’s work at the place where\u00a0 finality and \u00a0eternity converge, a place in where opposites become similar, even to the point of unity.<\/p>

It is not clear on which timeline Ratzker locates her works. Death embodied in the severed limbs is the past tense, but the slaughtered flesh bears no sign of decay. The title of the exhibition, \u201cRigor Mortis\u201d refers to the hardening of muscles which takes place after death as a type of continuing change, and therefore, in an absurd, macabre way \u2013 a kind of life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The exhibition curator is Pesi Girsch, one of the most interesting Israeli. Girsch has several series of photographs with images of dead animals in which she preserves their form as much as possible. In her own words, she provides animals which have been run over, attacked by other animals, or died in laboratories with a \u201cproper burial\u201d accomplished in a very gentle manner. Ratzker\u2019s action is different. The flesh becomes material that takes the form of objects of desire \u2013 an evening bag, armchair, or especially elegant chair. Sometimes their intricate shape \u00a0bring to mind Art Nouveau such as a piece by Lalique.<\/p>

The element of time in Ratzker\u2019s artworks is illusory. Death is in the past but also the continuing present. Other works such as Royal Throne, Bedside Table, <\/em>or Hollywood, <\/em>convey the feeling of momentary motion. The decay, which we know in advance will rot the meat, is another hidden timeline, waiting in ambush especially in works such as Parfum.<\/em><\/p>

Ratzker seems to alternately come closer and withdraw from the danger of advertising aesthetics. The works are beautiful but in an interesting way manage to directly preserve the sharpness and clarity that make them into crystals of death, distress, and beauty, so distilled that they are engraved in viewer\u2019s brains, high above the noisy present.<\/p>
