Four dancers perform for nearly an hour what looks like a process of exploration and peeling off a skin, a search, a scraping off and attempt at release, which may be thought of as a \u201ccloseup\u201d of the emergence of a butterfly from its cocoon. However, in this dance piece, what is shed, that which drops off to become dead organic matter, may be read in various ways.<\/p>\n

Choreographer Sharon Vazanna and artist Tomer Sapir created a collaborative work in the sense that Sapir\u2019s plastic artwork is on the actual bodies of the dancers themselves, not as scenery nor as clothing. It was an outgrowth of a series of meetings between the two, whose common denominator was the close observation of the body as desirable and seductive. Making the body present can easily slip into an overly explicit engagement in despising the physical, but here it seems that the artists are involved in observation. One might also say there is a release of the kernel of difficulty in speaking about the abject. The term was discussed in a very interesting way by Julia Kristeva in 1982 in her Powers of Horror: Essay on Abjection<\/em>. Kristeva spoke of the anxiety and revulsion aroused by states of collapse of the definitions between object and subject, between the \u201cI\u201d and the \u201cother.\u201d Her main example was the human response to corpses that remind us that we are mortal. Kristeva addresses similar responses to bodily excretions. That which is despised, argues Kristeva, preserves the memory of the violence and anarchy preceding order.
\nSapir covers the bodies of the dancers in powders and pigments to create a new layer of skin, like a skin disease, excretion or tattoo. It also causes them to look like animals or aliens. They are different in a magical yet threatening way from the way in which we are accustomed to see and imagine a body. The work also shows an additional use of a type of materiality of pigments which has characterized Tomer Sapir\u2019s previous works involving cryptids, forms of life not found in the \u201cnormal\u201d zoological index, which are the subject of myths (such as \u201cNessie,\u201d the Loch Ness monster).<\/p>\n

Humanness, which leads to identification and which preserves the rare quality of art being close enough yet far enough from us, is movement. The dancers struggle to shed the extra layer of skin, the dirt, the extra burden.
\nThe performance, which passes all too quickly, is a viewing of the process of change. It is surprisingly possible to read it as optimistic. From what looks like a disaster, alien and distant, humanness, humanity and communication shine through.<\/p>\n
