The library in the palace<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n-The Library of Babel<\/i>, Jorge Luis\u00a0Borges<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cThe Encyclopedic Palace,\u201d the exhibition curated by Massimiliano Gioni at the current Venice Biennale, evokes the Palazzo Encyclopedico by Marino Auriti, a forgotten Italian-American artist, who submitted a proposal for a project to the American Patent Office in 1955. The edifice, to be constructed in Washington, D.C., was planned as 136 floors holding all of the world\u2019s existing knowledge. It reminds us of the Tower of Babel as depicted in Italian Renaissance art, and echoes the Soviet \u201cpalaces\u201d – buildings intended to glorify Stalin\u2019s regime \u2013 and alludes to Vladimir Tatlin\u2019s design for a monument to the Third International (1920). Both are huge scale projects that were never built.<\/p>\n

\"Palazzo<\/a>
Palazzo Encyclopedico by Marino Auriti 1955<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cEncyclopedism,\u201d the belief that it is indeed possibleto compile all human knowledge in one place, now seems na\u00efve. Encyclopedias have existed since ancient times, reaching their height in the 19th<\/sup> century, the era of the great colonial empires who considered their might a proof of their justice and the grace of God. The West\u2019s cultural hubris led to the axiom that a culture could be summarized in a number of volumes.
\nAuriti designed his structure as a shrine to everything that was, is and will be. The idea is associated with libraries, truths, and especially mythologies. In a sense, the heartbeats of real and legendary libraries resound through the subconscious of the \u201cEncyclopedic Library,\u201d such as the \u201cHouse of Books\u201d of ancient Egypt, reputedly concealed under the Great Pyramid of Giza, and the Library of Alexandria, whose destruction in a fire symbolizes the fall of classical civilization.
\nLibraries as the flagships of culture resonate broadly with the public, whether it is the French National Library, one of Fran\u00e7ois Mitterand\u2019s grandiose construction projects, inaugurated in 1996 (as a \u201csister\u201d of the old Richelieu Library), or the new Jerusalem National Library. (The entire process of selecting its designers became a test case in the attempt to create a genius loci ex nihilo). In Jorge Luis Borges\u2019s story, \u201cLibrary of Babel\u201d (1941), learned scholars search through its infinite hexagonal rooms for the crimson hexagon, seeking the book which will help them decode all the other volumes.<\/p>\n

Effervescent permeable membranes of memory<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Carl<\/a>
Carl Gustav Jung, from The Red Book 1913-1930<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Borges\u2019s crimson hexagon comes to mind in the exhibition space in the Giardini where facsimile pages from the Red Book<\/i> by Carl Gustav Jung, one of the founding fathers of psychology, are on view. This is a key work from many aspects, amplifying Gionni\u2019s proposal to expand the art discourse and open its definition to include what has been classified in the past as mysticism. Jung wrote and illustrated The Red Book <\/i>during several periods of work from 1913-1930, years he devoted to the inner journey he called \u201cconfronting the subconscious,\u201d after his close ties with Freud broke down. Scholars have known about the book\u2019s existence since the early \u201860s. The text is handwritten, partly in impressive calligraphy, accompanied by drawings. Some are narrative drawings while others are abstract symbols based on religious symbolism (primarily Christian) and on the visual language of mysticism. The book was taken apart and the pages are exhibited here as works of art.
\nGionni has put forth a bold proposal challenging modern thought which developed during the Age of Enlightenment stating that rationalism is the be all and end all. Exhibiting Jung\u2019s illustrated book in a contemporary art context is part of the step this Biennale takes in changing the attitude towards time: if in the recent past, the date of an artwork has great weight in its classification and reception, it is in the \u201cEncyclopedic Palace,\u201d more than in other exhibitions (including the 2011 Biennale), that decades-old works are placed alongside works centuries old and amid new works – not as a curiosity or a demonstration of historical breadth, but because the element of time in the contemporary reading of artworks has changed.<\/p>\n

\"Shinro<\/a>
Shinro Ohtake scrapbooks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Books, an ancient medium which many predict will vanish in favor of electronic books, are central to Gionni\u2019s exhibition, the Biennale\u2019s national pavilions, and the satellite exhibitions. Japanese artist Shinro Ohtake (b. 1955) is exhibiting 66 scrapbooks in the \u201cEncyclopedic Museum,\u201d in a series of complex works made of scraps of cutouts and drawings from books, brochures and blank school notebooks. He uses a variety of printed matter, from newspapers to advertisements and books to create overflowing diaries, with an abundance ofcolorful images and materials (reminiscent of the works of underappreciated Israeli artist Gary Goldstein, b. 1950). In other works, Ohtake transforms notebooks into an object whose form is not directly related to its original use, as in his cube of notebooks. The objects feel alive, with effervescent permeable membranes of memory.<\/p>\n

\"\u201cThe<\/a>
\u201cThe Book of Genesis\u201d Robert Crumb 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

From the non-anthropological viewpoint, exhibiting \u201cThe Book of Genesis\u201d illustrated by Robert Crumb, the esteemed American comic’s artist, is part of the broader reference to myths. The book, published in 2009, is a full-length graphic novel, with 207 illustrations in black ink, dealing with all of the aspects of the bible story, including cruelty and sex. The book topped The New York Times <\/i>bestseller list of graphic novels, simultaneously as No. 1 on Amazon\u2019s Christian titles.Although the Judeo-Christian creation myth is presented as equal to all other non-western creation myths, it remains the foundation myth of our culture.<\/p>\n

The mass of knowledge has become a labyrinth<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The national pavilions of Brazil and Indonesia feature exhibitions of sculptures made of books or \u201cfaux books.\u201d Brazilian artist Odires Ml\u00e1szho presents a series of works which seem to be planned to stand side by side with the major exhibition. He used volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica to form objects connected, opened, wrapped up, and attached to each other. The mass of human knowledge here becomes a physical labyrinth inspired by the Moebius strip (a mathematical curiosity of a one-sided two-dimensional form).<\/p>\n

Titarubi \u201cShadow of Surrender\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Indonesian artist Titarubi (b. 1968, active in Djakarta) placed blank books on wooden tables as part of her \u201cShadow of Surrender\u201d exhibition of paintings and sculpture. Large books standing on schoolroom desks amid paintings of a forest seem to refer to the study and understanding of the existential question of how we perceive and experience the world, as well as the ecological aspect of the Biennale. Surprisingly, there are very few references to ecology in this Biennale.<\/p>\n

Orna Elstein\u2019s My Radiant Island 2013<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

\u00a0Orna Elstein\u2019s My Radiant Island<\/i> is an artist\u2019s book mounted at the entrance to the Giardini as part of her installation, which includes video art, paintings from the book, and the book. . It portrays Elstein\u2019s experience in the Seychelles in the western tradition of using islands as metaphors of alternative utopias, from ancient times to modern examples, such as Van Gogh\u2019s depictions of Polynesia and Tahiti.\u00a0Elstein\u2019s narrative describes \u201cher\u201d island as a paradise rich in<\/p>\n

vegetation, food and water. Hints at its more complex sides are found in the words of the poet, the only human figure in the poem and the drawings, whose very being means that the awareness of happiness means recognizing its limits. The book comprises poetry and 25 bright paintings whose style is reminiscent of German Expressionism, especially the Blaue Reiter<\/i> artists Franz Marc, August Macke, Gabrielle M\u00fcnter and Wassily Kandinsky. In the spirit of early Expressionism, Elstein sees painting as a channel for expression and spirituality, emphasizing the link between music and the visual arts. (In the video art installed near her book, Elstein plays the pantam drum and recites the text). Her art is part of the renewed look at time proposed in the \u201cEncyclopedic Palace\u201d and by what can be described as the stylistic polyphony of the art exhibited there.

Franz Kafka: Diaries 1914-1923, II<\/i> is a piece composed of 367 small-scale drawings by Colombian artist Jos\u00e9 Antonio Su\u00e1rez Londo\u00f1o (b. 1955, Colombia).Su\u00e1rez Londo\u00f1o drew intensively, creating surrealistic images following his reading of Kafka to form a kind of diary of reading and life.
\nBooks as objects, such as Jung\u2019s Red Book, <\/i>Elstein\u2019s My Radiant Island<\/i>, Ohtake\u2019s Scrapbooks<\/i>, Su\u00e1rez Londo\u00f1o\u2019s Diaries<\/i> after Kafka, the books in the Brazilian, Indonesian, Chinese and Iraqi pavilions, reinforce the concept of the Biennale as an open journey through less familiar bodies of knowledge.<\/p>\n

The spirit of Borges\u2019s fantastic Library resides within the \u201cEncyclopedic Palace.\u201d<\/p>\n
