The ability to freeze the ambiguous, the elusive, the moment of wondering before we define to ourselves that the thing is that way or another, reminds us of something familiar or similar to it \u2014 is what makes Yoav Weinfeld’s works ones that remain in memory with a question mark hanging beside them. They touch upon the relationship, often tenuous, between what is visible and our knowledge and perception of it: an infant sleeping peacefully, yet we know he is not safe; a veil carrying highly-charged meanings; or a candle meant to shed light and dispel ignorance, but fails to do so. The fragility of the images leaves us wondering: what have we seen, grasped, remembered.<\/p>

Aluminum constitutes the dominant substrate in the exhibition\u2014most of the works are painted on it, engraved on it, and made from it, and the distance between painting and object diminishes. Works such as “Boy Looking Down” (2025; two aluminum plates connected by an aluminum tube that embraces the large back surface and holds the front surface on which a portrait appears) are three-dimensional objects where the painted image is only questionably destined to remain part of it. It’s interesting to think of the non-magnetic quality of this metal as complementing its nature as a material that doesn’t absorb color, and thus the painted images remain on the surface, as if they could detach at any moment and disappear. The aluminum radiates alienation, and a latent violence is nested within it. An encounter, perhaps a struggle, between material and color creates a sharpened frequency of tension. The work on the exhibition “Wuthering Heights” began when questions of representation belonged to the theoretical realms of dealing with perception. They became acute after the October 7 massacre in which Einav Levy, Weinfeld’s sister-in-law, was murdered, and her husband Or Levy, his brother-in-law, was kidnapped to Gaza. Yoav and his partner Tal, Or\u2019s brother, took it upon themselves to raise Almog, Or and Eynav\u2019s two-year-old son. The work on the exhibition continued intermittently throughout Or\u2019s 491 days in captivity, and opened a few months after his return to his family. Wuthering Heights<\/em> challenges the very plausibility of representing reality. It evokes a sense that reality is becoming ever more intricate and impenetrable\u2014a dense tangle almost impossible to unravel.<\/p>

The exhibition is installed on both floors of the Migdal Gallery: the works on the entrance floor unfold like a stream of consciousness, with objects, moments etched in memory, and stories that intertwine to form a confluence. On the second floor, the installation Echo Chamber<\/em> transforms the space into an imaginary music machine, exploring affinities between art, ensconced in its realm, and the actuality that keeps knocking on its door.<\/p>

The exhibition addresses the paradoxical situation in which an emotional flood leads to the need to distance oneself, to retreat into an ostensibly pain-proof bubble in order to be able to go on living. The dissonance prevalent since the war’s outbreak in October 2023 is reiterated in \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d\u2014through its materials and the nonheroic, mundane, banal imagery that persists within a cold, at times alienated yet elegant setting.<\/p>

The range of images presented on the entrance floor of the Migdal Gallery oscillates between the poetic to the formalistic\u2014portraits and objects alongside minimalist geometric imagery. An inhaler, a veil, a Japanese utility knife, a lemon, a closed window shutter resembling a set of latitudinal lines, A clock stopped ticking. The portraits, some of young children, others faces of generic characters whose age or gender cannot be discerned \u2013 all are enclosed, their gaze averted or disconnected. Although it would be difficult to describe them, to detail every feature, they could easily be identified. Each portrait has uniqueness and expression \u2013 sometimes of horror and bewilderment as in “Boy Looking Down” and “Almog,” and sometimes of sorrow as in the portraits from the series “The Loneliness of the Lost.”<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The painting’s installation “The Loneliness of the Lost” (named after a line from the poem “Campo di Fiori” by Polish poet Czes\u0142aw Mi\u0142osz) is in a way a conceptual map for the arrangement of works on the first floor. At the center of the installation is “The Clock of All Possibilities,” an image of a malfunctioning digital clock (which will reappear on the second floor as well). The clock that is all possibilities is also the clock of absence, the clock of emptiness, a clock whose digital zero digits stare like empty eyes into space. Around this void, which is also everything, small paintings, some abstract, others of objects like a Japanese knife, and also one portrait. In all of them the aluminum, the substrate, is also a present, prominent component. The constellation is balanced but not symmetrical, and so is the entire space. Weinfeld’s works touch on spheres where balance is disrupted, and leave a degree of ambiguity. They sharpen the feeling of not knowing, allow one to observe it but do not comfort the viewer.<\/p>

The story of the exhibition can be interpreted in a way that begins at different points and branches out to various end points, as in reality (but without the risks inherent in it). The relationships between the works are dramatic \u2013 a very small work next to a large work, a work hung close to the ceiling versus a floor work \u2013an internal volcano bubbles in the universe of “Wuthering Heights”<\/p>

In a large floor work (untitled), systems of squares that multiply and dissolve and images reminiscent of contact sheets (sheets for examining frames photographed on analog film). The association with early photographic techniques reemerges throughout the exhibition. The camera obscura (“dark chamber”)\u2014believed to have been invented in ancient times\u2014offered an image of the outside reality, reflected within the chamber in inverted form. Throughout history, there have been numerous attempts to obtain fixed images using a variety of materials. One may say that photography is the embodiment of the human desire to capture and freeze a fleeting image using a medium beyond painting. This was first achieved in 1839 with the invention of the daguerreotype, a photograph made on a metal plate, a process developed by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, which resulted in the first permanently fixed image.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Weinfeld’s work on aluminum plates alludes to this process, an association reinforced by the sense of transience conveyed by many of the images, which appear as if they might fade at any moment, shift from one state of aggregation to another, and dissolve into indistinct shapes that linger only in memory.<\/p>

Lullaby (13.10.23)<\/em> is a screenprint on aluminum after a photograph of Tal, the artist’s partner, putting his toddler nephew to sleep\u2014a tender moment captured near the outbreak of the war. The image of a sleeping infant, the epitome of innocence, is charged with dark meaning by the harrowing circumstances evoked by the date in the title. On the adjacent wall, “The Clock of All Possibilities” does not tick but gazes at the hall-world with its large, digital zeros, like a blind person. Time stopped at the time of disaster, and “Lullaby (13.10.23),” whose center glows with reddish light, is stained in the context of death (sleep as “little death”).<\/p>

The painting Veil calls to mind the piece of cloth offered by St. Veronica to Christ as he carried the cross on his way to Calvary. Legend has it that Veronica handed him a kerchief to wipe his brow, and when he returned it to her, it bore the likeness of his face. This veil-portrait became a symbol of truth and of art’s power to expose it. The painting hangs in the center of the space between the painting installation “The Loneliness of the Lost” and “Lullaby (13.10.23)”, a meditation on truth and on the possibility of art to represent it.<\/p>

In the first volume of his canonical novel In Search of Lost Time, Marcel Proust describes an obsessive lover holding up an envelope to the light of a candle, hoping to secretly read its contents, yet only fragments of words emerge, remaining ultimately unintelligible. The image turned painting-on-aluminum refers to the desire to see beyond, through the painterly object, with the gaze embodying a longing for the unattainable. The painting He lighted a candle, and held up close to its flame the envelope which he had not dared to open is installed at some distance from Lullaby (13.10.23), forming a kind of triangle: between the inquiry into the validity of an image in Veil (Veronica and “the truth”); the tenderness and sorrow of Lullaby (13.10.23) and its inconceivable tragedy; and the candle-and-letter painting, which addresses the impossibility of deciphering, the inability to obtain one’s deepest desire.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The control of the gaze, its direction and deflection, and the creation of a frequency of attention are explored in the installation Resonance Chamber featured on the second floor of the Migdal Gallery, whose space has been transformed into a resonance chamber that viewer physically experiences. The wall of windows overlooking Tel Aviv is obscured by aluminum panels, interspersed with laser-cut images, creating a formal stream of consciousness. The observation tower becomes an inward-facing lookout point, a sounding board in which internal emotion resonates as strongly as the fragmentary landscape glimpsed through the openings and slits cut into the aluminum. The geometric cuts evoke the work of Victor Vasarely\u2014one of the founding figures of Op Art (a movement that sought to understand visual perception and optical illusion)\u2014and Lucio Fontana, who founded Spatialism, a practice connecting movement, space, time, and color. Some of the cuts are reminiscent of plectrums of mechanical musical instruments, whose plucking produces sound, while images such as eyeglasses, a hand, or an “explosion” recall American Pop Art and the work of Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, and Andy Warhol. Also featured is a lute-shaped perforation, alluding to the ancient musical instrument, an image derived from a 1526 engraving by Albrecht D\u00fcrer depicting two men using a perspective apparatus to accurately draw a lute. By perforating the lute motif, Weinfeld creates a kind of negative. Coupled with the convex shape of the space, the lute evokes a metal drum, like the mechanical music boxes prevalent in the 19th century, which produced sound through the friction of metal against a rotating pin. This image touching on the question of the manner of seeing connects to images from the world of pop and to those from formalist art, surrounding the viewer in a frenetic dance of images that seems unceasing.<\/p>
