Michel Platnic Bordermine

Michel Platnic :Double Portrait 2020 Photography 69×105 cm

Michel Platnic | Bordermine

Much can be written about Bordermine, the new exhibition by Michel Platnic, which seems to have been planned to generate publicity, but it saddened me to see it. With consummate technical skills, Platnic disembowels Egon Schiele’s art, dulling its edge, and making it shallow, yet makes not the slightest statement about it.

Michel Platnic : Sitting girl with Raised Head 2020

Schiele’s images become no more than an accessory, a certificate of connoisseurship, as it were, for the owner, resonating postmodernism and art history references alike.

Using video, stills, painting, drawing, and performance, Platnic “resuscitates” works by Schiele, one of the superb artists of the early 20th century, but the question remains as to why. It seems that there is no real justification. Schiele (1890-1918), was active during the glorious decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He transformed the rich, self-satisfied Viennese Jugendstil on which he was raised into art that got under the skin, allowing not a moment’s rest. The lines in the drawings made between 1907-1918 are tensed to the point of pain: shattered and bleeding, they delineate fragile figures (and landscapes) that maintain eye contact with the artist and viewers that is both submissive and apprehensive. His short life, which ended at age 28, only made him more admired in contemporary art; he was mentored by Gustav Klimt, who promoted him and helped him. Recognition was almost immediate, as Schiele’s works were exhibited at important venues, especially in Germany, and published in major periodicals. Along with his artistic success, he was arrested for immoral behavior (the judge burned one of his drawings in court). As mentioned quite frequently during the current pandemic, he died from Spanish flu in 1918, three days after his pregnant wife died in the epidemic.

Platnic took the works most identified with Schiele, including painful self-portraits, and diluted them into something between a pale copy and dark humor. The similarity to all sorts of “art challenges” on Instagram is too apparent. such as the challenge to digitally “animate” a work of art, or pantomimes or audiovisual representations of famous artworks from Leonardo to van Gogh.

These homages/artworks lack the bite present in the discussion on cultural appropriation in the large oeuvre of Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura (b. 1951). For several decades he has been engaging in the tension between his identity as an artist, a Japanese man, and figures and issues from western art, from Cindy Sherman (whose generic images in which she appeared he appropriated) through Rembrandt and Manet to Marilyn Monroe. There is no conscious awareness of the discourse on the issue of copies, such as raised in projects by American artist Elaine Frances Sturtevant (1924-2014). Sturtevant, who made copies of works by artists, most of whom she identified and copied before they received broad recognition from the art world, engaged in a continuing attempt to adhere to the core essence of the works she chose and to explore the concepts of copying, influence, and replication.

Platnic has exhibited projects similar to Borderline, especially the high profile series after Francis Bacon, which were much more interesting and complex than the present series. The passion and the neurosis, touches of the repressed in Schiele’s artworks, (Schiele’s Vienna was also Freud’s), seem to be in an induced coma in which even fluttering eyelids and slight movements of painted clothing are unable to revive.
