Memory of the Holocaust: A lengthening shadow

Dana Yoeli , 2021 ,  hand built porcalin.

Memory of the Holocaust: A lengthening shadow

Dana Yoeli’s journey through her work in clay and porcelain, part of her practice for over a decade, became more intensive after her grandmother, a ceramicist, passed away a few years ago. During the pandemic, over the last year Yoeli has been making small, refined sculptures – disrupted, limbless, and fragmented. Merav Shinn Ben-Alon, who works in a wide range of expressive mediums, has been engaged in the intensive deconstruction, construction, and collaging of photographs of the Jewish Hospital in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), a social-medical institution which the Nazis exploited to the fullest before murdering its staff.

The two new bodies of work are part of the engagement by Israeli artists in the representation of memory of the Holocaust and not of the historical event.. This is a huge, complex issue that has been expanding, adding layers every year as the horrors recede in time. Research perspectives, the opening of previously sealed archives, and physical access to locations barred to Israelis for decades, whether in Eastern Europe until the 1990s or in North Africa, have created changes in thinking about and remembering the period. History is always read from the present. In art, awareness of processes of memory and forgetting in the context of the Shoah have coincided with an exploration of issues of reality, time and language, along with the renewed critical look at the Modernism of the first half of the 20th century of which Nazism was a part, in certain aspects.

Yoeli’s hand-built porcelain sculptures bear a longing for a non-specific time and state, a simulacrum of yearning rooted between Mannerism and the Rococo, in the heart of bourgeois life. Hands and candlesticks appear repeatedly in the works in a constant search for the whole that has been torn apart, generating small memorials like talismans. Yoeli has been continuing the process she began in the exhibition “Crypt” at the Chelouche Gallery in late 2019, which became more introverted and refined over the past year. The palm-sized sculptures are sites in which vegetative, funerary, erotic, and cruel elements blend into tempestuous, attractive, romantic but arresting objects.

The chain of associations in these works is almost painful, with highs of culture and lows of roughness: Meissen porcelain, “Judenporzellan” (the inferior porcelain Jews were forced to purchase in previous centuries in various German principalities), white, transparent porcelain as pure as light and frozen as death, cultural and physical disruption, refinement transformed into meaninglessness, weakening, slipping away, and withering.

The Breslau Hospital project was based on the inability to approach memory beyond a certain point, on the distance between knowledge and imagination, and on emptying out external layers. Shinn Ben-Alon used photographs of the hospital she received from a Polish artists’ group that was active on site a few years ago. The building has preserved its beauty and materiality; the artist deconstructed the photographs into collages rich in pixels and imprisoned spaces, creating a complex, bitter dialogue with the basic components of the space which have become disrupted and collapsed upon themselves. In the context of her previous works which used photography as a starting point, it will be interesting to examine the relationship between the documentation and the deconstruction of this particular space.

Dana Yoeli , 2021

The two bodies of work in progress are linked to specific historical aspects: in Yoeli’s oeuvre, her engagement with the figure of Agi Yoeli, Holocaust survivor and ceramicist, and for Shinn Ben-Alon the interest in a specific Jewish institution with orderly documentation of its heroic practical and moral resistance to the Nazis. Despite their origin, the power of the works lies in the way the two artists translate the sensation of being under a cloud, threatened by the toxicity and ugliness of reality filtering in like a threatening shadow as the light dims.
