טינטורטו – הולדתו של גאון היא תערוכה מרשימה,חכמה וכן, מרוממת נפש. למרות שנדמה שמדובר באחד מהאמנים המוכרים ביותר התערוכה שמתרכזת בחמש עשרה השנים הראשונות של הקרירה המפוארת שלו מפתיעה .

מדובר באוסף שכיות חמדה של ממש – לצד עבודות ממוזאונים מרכזיים מהפראדו במדריד ועד האופיצי בפירנצה מוצגות עבודות רבות מאוספים פרטיים שכמעט ולא הוצגו בעבר. במקרים בודדים, כמו אוסף המלכה הבריטית מצוין שם האוסף אך בדרך כלל המשאילים העדיפו להשאר אנונימים .

טינטורטו נולד כ Jacopo Robusti ואת הכינוי טינטורטו (צבעי בדים קטן ) קיבל כנראה בגלל שהיה זה מקצועו של אביו. העבודה המוקדמת בתערוכה הערצת המאגי צוירה על ידו כשהיה בן פחות מעשרים .נהשפעות של טיציאן שהיה האמן החשוב והמוכר בוונציה כשטינטורטו החל ניכרות היטב . ולעיתים יש גם דימיון לאל גרקו שהיה צעיר מטינטורתו בשני עשורים ונחשב כיוצא דופן בקו החופשי אקספרסיבי שלו.
עשרות תאטראות חובבים פעלו בונציה של אמצע המאה ה 16 והעלו הפקות באירועים ובקרנבלים עירונים טינטורטו עיצב עבורם תפאורות.בעבודות אחדות כמו “ישו והאשה הנואפת ” התחושה התיאטרלית מודגשת בהקצרות פנטסטיות של אדריכלות היוצרות אסוסיאציות לדה קירקו של תחילת המאה העשרים .

התערוכה עוקבת אחרי שיתוף פעולה קצר מועד לו עם Giovanni Galizzi, אמן שכמעט השתכח,אחרי רישומי הפסלים שעשה כתרגילים ואחרי ציורי נשים ממודל. התערוכה מצליחה ליצור תחושה של היכרות כשאנחנו רואים תהליך של שיכלול ושיפור ציורי לצד נועזות הולכת וגוברת של ספקטאקולריות .לצד התיאטרליות המופגנת מבליחות בעבודות המוקדמות מסורות ביזנטיניות שהשתמרו בציור ונציאני ,בעיקר מבחינה איקונוגרפית (אנימה שעפה בשמים, סצנת חטא שמבליעה רגיסטרים של סיפור הגירוש מגן העדן ועוד).
התקופה המוקדמת של טינטורטו מעלה את המחשבה שההשפעה שלו על Veronese שעבר לוונציהבתום השנים שמקיפה תערוכה זו , גדולה ממה שנדמה היה בעבר. ורונזה הפך לעמית של טינטורטו והם התחרו על פרויקטים שונים. בציור המוכר מאד של ורונזה,”החתונה בכנה” ( 1562 , היום בלובר ) הוא צייר את דיוקן טינורטו ודיוקן טיציאן לצד דיוקן עצמי, והם נחשבים יחד לטריומווארט של הציור הונציאני של המאה ה 16.

בשנים המאוחרות שלו, שנות הציור של Scuola di San Rocco טיטורטו נשאר מבריק אך דומה שיש צד מפוכח, ומהורהר יותר בציור. בתערוכה “טינטורטו הולדתו של גאון” , (שם שרק בפריס, לצד גני הלוקסמבורג היפיפים נשמע לחלוטין לא מצועצע) , הוא חוגג את יכולתיו שלו , נע בין ציור דשן לציור בקוים ספורים, מתרפק על עושר צורני ויופי ללא מעצורים.

Tintoretto: Birth of a GeniusTintoretto
Birth of a Genius is an impressive, wise, and yes – uplifting exhibition. Despite the fact that Tintoretto is one of the world’s most well-known artists, an exhibition focused on the first 15 years of his Tintoretto’s early works, such as the Adoration of the Magi, 1537-1538, painted when he was less than 20 years old, show the influence of Titian, the most important painter in Venice at the time, and often some similarities to the young El Greco, two decades younger than Tintoretto, whose free expressive lines were considered unusual.Dozens of amateur theatres were active in mid-16th century Venice. Tintoretto designed scenery for many of them, and adopted the imagery in works such as Jesus and the Woman Taken in Adultery, 1547-1549, emphasizing the theatricality in the fantastic architectural foreshortenings which create associations to De Chirico of the early 20th century.The exhibition succeeds in generating a sense of getting to know the artist by showing the process of an improved painterly style with increasing boldness in his spectacular scenes.

Tintoretto’s early period leads to speculation that Tintoretto had greater influence on Veronese (who moved to Venice during the years covered by this exhibition) than thought of in the past. In Veronese’s famous painting The Wedding at Cana, 1562, now in the Louvre, portraits of Tintoretto and of Titian are alongside his own self-portrait, depicting the triumvirate of 16th century Venetian painting.
In Tintoretto’s late years, during which the Scuola di San Rocco prevailed, he remained brilliant but showed more of his sober, thoughtful side in his paintings. The exhibition Tintoretto: Birth of a Genius (only in Paris, near the lovely Luxembourg Gardens, does the name not seem kitschy) celebrates his abilities, moving between lush painting and spare lines, based on formal richness and unfettered beauty.
